Scaffolding: crucial for building maintenance

Unlike new buildings, maintenance work on historic buildings requires special care. The passage of time, the change in atmospheric conditions and pollution weaken the structures, so restoration of these assets has to go through a delicate process in which the scaffolding design plays an important role.

The primary objective of the scaffolding is to ensure that its installation does not cause damage to the historic building.

The success of historic building maintenance is linked to proper planning, assembly and adequate use of scaffolding. A lousy uprising in these temporary structures can cause irreversible damage to these works, which are related to the history of cities. Hence, the work must be closely supervised by qualified professionals.

It is easier to repair damage caused in a building of recent construction, so proprietaries do not worry too much about it. As a contrast, the consequences of a collapse in an old building are irreparable.

Scaffolding in building maintenance

When building maintenance is being executed, in many cases, scaffolding is attached to its walls. It occurs the opposite on historical buildings since scaffolding must be separated to avoid damages.

One of the most used to avoid touching the historical buildings are the independent tied scaffold towers. They are called independent because they have no contact with the walls of the building. The stability of these scaffolds is achieved by being “knotted” together.

The study of the soil must be meticulous to install the scaffolding in historical sites. In general, a group of professionals designs the strategy before lifting the temporary structures that will be used in the restoration work. While working outside the historic building, the scaffolding must be proportional to the work, and many calculations are necessary to achieve it.

To avoid risks of a collapse of the historical structure, scaffolding work should be done in the shortest time possible without affecting the finishes. While the temporary structure is up, supervision is necessary, since these scaffolds are usually not connected to the vertical structure of the building.

Speed is the goal

Repairs to new buildings are made with greater confidence since they take less time than constructions. Their structure is much stronger, construction materials are available, and scaffolds can be placed more freely. If there is any damage to the structure, there is no risk that the damage will be permanent as in historic buildings.

In the same way, safety protocols must be followed to avoid a bad scaffolding erection and, naturally, the collapse of the structure and accidents with the construction workers.

Scaffolding plays an essential role in building maintenance. The planning, the design, and the assembly will determine the success of the restoration work in a historical work, as well as in the new buildings.
